The School of Medicine Rural Clinical School (RCS) and the UQ Library provide Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs) to 3rd Year MBBS students during their Rural Medicine rotation. The objectives of the service are to:

  • provide access to authoritative, evidence-based information to the RCS medical students at their point of need
  • contribute to a positive rural medical education experience and address equity issues for students who are placed in remote or isolated areas and may have limited access to information and technology infrastructure.
  • optimise the application of contemporary information and telecommunications technologies in healthcare and to prepare students for practicing medicine in 21st Century
PDA
Past student comments:
"[the PDA] can make clinical situations into teaching moments when questions can be explored with the clinician in combination with PDA resources"
"Access information quicker and still in the clinical context, therefore it is more relevant."
"My PDA allows me to look up more of my questions as they arise rather than having to remember to look them up later when often it doesn't get done"
"Contributes by allowing me to look up information when the need arises, thus providing a more salient learning experience"

PDA The PDAs provided are Pocket PCs (Dell AXIM x51) which provide for basic personal information management functions including calendar, contacts database, to do lists and Microsoft Office applications, such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint. The standard suite of information resources are:
  • The Oxford handbook of clinical medicine
  • The Oxford handbook of clinical specialties
  • Australian medicines handbook
  • Stedman's medical dictionary
  • Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia (RCPA) Handbook
  • Archimedes clinical calculator
