The Herston Health Sciences Library is one of 14 branch libraries of the University of Queensland Library. It provides resources and services to support the teaching, learning and research needs of staff and students, in addition to hospital staff located on the Herston site. The University, the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital and the Royal Children's Hospital jointly fund the Herston Health Sciences Library.
The Herston Health Sciences Library is located on
Level 6 of Block 6 of the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital, Herston Road, Herston. The Herston Health Sciences Library was established in 1984 when the University's Central Medical and Clinical Sciences Libraries amalgamated. Some years later the Library began services to the Royal Children's Hospital, and then in 1993 combined with the Nursing Library to provide the services and facilities now available.
Annually the Herston Health Sciences Library produces a report on its achievements and progress made throughout the year. For the interest of library users and the general public these reports are now available online.
The strengths of the Herston Health Sciences Library are in Indigenous Health, Medical History, Medicine (all fields), Nursing, Nutrition, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Orthopaedics, Paediatrics and Child Health, Pathology, Psychiatry, Social and Preventive Medicine, Surgery and Tropical Health. The on-site collection includes:
- 20,900 books,
- 750 current journal titles,
- over 300 journal articles in e-reserve and hard copy,
- videos.
There are 4 express email computers and 29 public computers throughout the Herston Health Sciences Library. These provide access to:

The Herston Health Sciences Library is located at the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital on the corner of Herston Road and Bowen Bridge Road, Herston. The entrance to the Library is on Level 6 in Block 6.
All services and facilities are located on Level 6. This level contains the external and internal return chutes, loans and information desk, main computer area with networked printers, the eZone, reference and video collections, book and journal collections, group study rooms, new book and periodical display area, internal telephone, photocopiers and the staff work area. The computers are able to be used for access to the library catalogue, databases and the internet, word-processing, email and computer-assisted learning packages. There are a variety of study areas including quiet talking areas, group study rooms and individual carrels.

UQ staff and students
- Need a 'smart-encoded' UQ staff or student ID card.
- Contact Alf Roset a.roset@uq.edu.au by email with your family name and first name. He will either activate the card remotely or make a time to meet with you to activate the card.
- Expiry will be linked to staff/student expiry date.
Hospital members
- Bring your Hospital ID badge into the library.
- Complete an application form.
- Existing library membership is required.
- A swipe card will be issued.
Important information
- Do not punch holes in the card - they will become inactive.
- There is a replacement cost for lost swipe cards this is a $20 admin charge for losing 2 cards.
- Cards cannot be lent or given to another person.
- Those who do not adhere to the terms and conditions (and Internet Code of Conduct) may lose access privileges to the room.
- Use of the after access room is for teaching, learning and research purposes only.
- Cards will need to be returned at the end of the contract or when you leave.
The after hours book return chute is located outside the main entrance to the Herston Health Sciences Library. When the Library is open items are returned to the return chute located at the loans desk.
The Herston Health Sciences Library provides 33 computers and 11 laptop ports for accessing the Library website including the catalogue, databases, and the internet. Email facilities are also available.
A display area is available at the entrance to the Library. Displays and exhibitions are used to promote the Library and Hospital activities as well as displays on topical health issues.
There are quiet study areas available within the Herston Health Sciences Library.
There are 5 individual rooms available within the Herston Health Sciences Library.
There are 2 group rooms. Bookings may be made for these rooms up to one week in advance, using the Room Bookings System.
The Bookings page is released daily at 4pm. To facilitate equitable sharing of the room/s students may use the Group Study Rooms for a total of three sessions per week. One session is up to two hours. Bookings may be made by entering your UQ username and password in the relevant day, room and time on the booking sheet. Students may alter their bookings themselves if necessary.
White board markers may be requested from staff at the information desk.
Over 20,000 books and 500 current journal subscriptions are held in the Herston Health Sciences Library.

The Herston Health Sciences Library houses the Otto Hirschfeld Collection - a collection of historical medical books and papers.
Members of the University of Queensland Library may suggest items to be added to the Library's collection.
Schools and Centres may also contact their Liaison Librarian, to make a suggestion for purchase.
New print material is displayed in the Recently Received Books and Journals area in the Herston Health Sciences Library.

The Library is wheelchair accessible via the lift on the ground level of Block 6. Library staff are always ready to provide any additional assistance.

Enquiries about loans, problems with library records and requests for items held at another campus library can be made at the Loans Desk. Held items and items requested from the warehouse of other libraries are also held at the loans desk.
Lost property is held for two weeks at the Loans Desk and then is given to Security.

The Herston Health Sciences Library provides copying and network printing.
All copying is subject to copyright restrictions.
A University of Queensland student or staff card or a Unicard is required to operate the photocopiers. There is an automatic card dispensing machine where copy cards can be purchased and value added to existing cards.
Television programs useful for teaching, learning and research are copied and placed into the Library's collection. The Library also works closely with the Central Video Replay Service (CVRS).
