Module 3: Effective Internet Searching

3.1 Websites

Let's take a look at some useful hints for locating information on the web.

Use known web sites

Think about the type of information you are searching for. Do you already know of any web sites that would be likely to contain this information? Go to these known web sites and use their search tool to see if they have relevant information.

Activity - Let's say you are looking for information about fire ants.

icon Which government department/s do you think would handle the eradication and control of these pests? What are the URLs for the departmental web site/s?

The Library provides a range of tools to locate previously identified sources of web-based information.

    Every Subject Guide provides a range of web sites suitable for locating information.

  • Quick Reference
    Find answers to specific questions quickly - addresses, facts, figures, statistics, definitions and dates. Also look under Toolkit from the UQ Library home page.
